Definitely the feature of Geneva that I’ll miss the most!

Matt’s visit

Matt just headed off for a long day of travel early this morning. Of course, we’ve had 100% perfect weather for the past two weeks, and now it’s pouring rain. “Il pleure dans mon coeur comme il pleut sur la ville” amiright? It’s been just such a divine two weeks, and suddenly, I’m almost home. 10 little old days and I’m stateside! Just a few odd assignments, 2 papers, and 1 (rather worrisome) exam in between now and then. I’m excited but oddly nervous about coming home. I’m definitely not ready to reflect on my time here, so I won’t. But here’s a link to the Facebook album of Matt’s and my time together in Europe. We really only took pictures during the second week, since neither of us are that crazy about snapping pix. In addition to what you see here, we did lots of picnicking by the lake, went to hear both Celtic music and jazz in Geneva, went to an indie dance concert in Lausanne (there are few pictures there,) ate lots of delicious meals both at home and out, and consumed a great deal of gelatto and chocolate! I’m so so glad that Matt was able to come share this amazing study abroad experience with me, and that we were able to do so many fun things together while he was here! Now it’s time for a few less fun activities before it’s finally, finally summer! Back to trying to force myself into work mode. Enjoy the images!

Birthday Weekend

Sorry for the lengthy delay in posting! I’ve been really busy with work ever since my parents left more or less, trying to get lots done before Matt gets here (in less than two days!) I’m taking a quick study break to write about this past weekend because a) it was very very fun and b) studying for this test is highly boring. So many facts about European integration…so much apathy.

On Saturday I ran a 6k race! It was called La Genevoise and was only for ladies, which was a little silly, but it was still great to be running with a bunch of women! I set this race as a training goal way back in February, and it was great to see it come to fruition! I can now totally see the value in training for something - otherwise it’s nearly impossible for me to stay motivated! I definitely feel hooked on racing - it was really fun to pass people and sprint over the finish line! Hopefully this will be the first of many races.

It poured rain most of Saturday, which resulted in me being a total Eeyore about my birthday. I’d never been away from home on my birthday before, and not having your parents there to spoil you just feels really different. But my two wonderful Emmas made my birthday so special and memorable - a truly wonderful day! We got to catch a glimpse of the marathon-ers, which was very exciting to watch. We then shipped off to the lovely little town of Neuchatel. It was raining really hard and was extremely windy when we first got there, which resulted in a dramatic series of events, pictured below.

I’ve never seen so many swans in one place before!

Apparently I have a bald spot - and my hat blew away!

The Emmas were yelling “go go go!”, and go I did!

This is what being 21 looks like.

We toured the little Chateau that now functions as the parliament building for the canton of Neuchatel. We had a delightful little guide. I snapped a few shots of the outside and stuff but I can only indulge my procrastination to a certain extent. Most lovey are the shots of Lake Neuchatel that we took from the the balcony of the chateau and the top of the prison tower down the street.

This is the only remaining wall of the 2nd chateau (today’s chateau is the 3rd.) Lots of buildings in Neuchatel are made out of a local yellow sandstone, prompting Alexandre Dumas to say that this town was carved out of butter.

We capped off the day with delicious carrot cake cupcakes and 5CH champagne. It was a magical day that I will never forget! I’ve reflected a bit on turning 21, and so far I just feel kind of old since I’m officially “in my 20s” now, and that I need to keep working on feeding myself better. Sophie and I talked about how it’s hard to remember that every day isn’t Halloween.

I’m back to European facts for a while. I am insanely excited for Matt’s arrival early Wednesday morning, and will only be more so once this dumb dumb exam is over tomorrow night at 6pm! Can’t wait to get it out of the way and to be only hours away from seeing such a wonderful person!
